A Helicopter Ride Above The Na Pali Coast

Na Pali, Kauai

Inaccessible by road there are really only three ways to see the Na Pali coast of Kauai – by helicopter, by boat or on foot. I wanted to see this unbelievable place from every possible angle! So during our five days on the island we tried all three, even if my stomach didn’t appreciate the helicopter ride all that much.

The practical nature of the safety briefing was quite refreshing, its clear and consistent message being simply “just get out of the damn helicopter!” Despite reassuring words from our pilot I was still a little nervous about our flight before take-off.

But as soon as we were in the air I was focussed on only one thing – capturing magical Kauai as best I could. As we flew along the Na Pail coast I could barely believe my eyes. Surely this is the most incredible coastline in the world?

Have you ever been on a helicopter tour? Maybe you’ve seen the Na Pali coast too? I’d love to hear from you!

Man, what a view… it’s funny isn’t it, whatever hesitations you might have getting in, the view completely takes it all away once you’re up there! I’ve never been to Hawaii, but I took an amazing helicopter ride over Christchurch NZ… I was a bit unsure at first too, but now that I’ve tried it, I’d take another ride again in a heart beat! Hopefully you have more to come, too!

Yeah it’s very strange, all of the fear just evaporates as soon as you’re in the air! Wow NZ must be an amazing place to take a helicopter ride, I guess you went around the southern alps? I would love to visit that part of the world some day.

I agree, even though I was hesitant this time I wouldn’t think twice about doing it again. I hope you do too! Thanks Jess.

Oh absolutely, can’t wait for another opportunity to present itself! I actually flew over Christchurch post-earthquake, which was a pretty surreal and different experience… very, very amazing and humbling

Oh wow, yeah that must have been really interesting. Quite a sobering experience! I hope you manage to make it back on a ‘copter soon 🙂

Thanks Max, I love the photos from your flight. I will have to take to the skies over the Grand Canyon next time I’m there! It must have been an amazing sight.

Thanks Krista, they really were incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it! So much variety in one spot, the reds and oranges are breathtaking.

This looks amazing! It sounds from Em like you had an amazing time 🙂 We did a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon the first time we went to Vegas which as i’m sure you can imagine was amazing! I’ve also done one around Manhattan although at 7 minutes, I can’t say it was worth it!

This is ridiculously beautiful! I cant blame you for wanting to see it from each angle 🙂 What was the helicopter ride like then? Does it make you sick? I’ve never been in one but have given it a thought once or twice – not sure now because I have quite a weak stomach!

Yeah my stomach was a bit uneasy for about half the flight. I think it was worse because I was spending quite a bit of time looking through my viewfinder which accentuates the motion. When it got too bad I would try and stop taking photos for a minute or two and it made a big difference. It was hard to be disciplined on that though!

So if you do give it a go my advice would be to just be aware of that, and maybe just focus more on looking without a camera. I get motion sickness on boats so I was expecting it with the helicopter too.

I’m the same with motion sickness but I got those awesome tablets in Thailand and they really made a difference. Thankfully I have some left over so if I ever decide to take a helicopter ride I’ll bring them along! Shame about not being able to take photos for a while, I’m the sort of person that just needs to capture everything! My boyfriend is the complete opposite – he says it’s all in his memory and he hasn’t taken a photo in 3 years! Unthinkable for me 😉 Thanks again for the good advice and congrats on the marriage 🙂 x

Yeah I took some tablets before our catamaran tour of the Na Pali coast and they worked a treat. I should have taken them for the helicopter too! Haha, I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the fun in travelling is capturing new places, everywhere offers a new perspective on the world! Plus my memory is absolutely terrible… Hopefully if you take some medication beforehand you will be able to snap away to your heart’s content 🙂
