Am I Being Watched?

Bairro Alto, Lisbon

While wandering around the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon I suddenly had this feeling I was being watched. Out of the corner of my eye I could see these little animals peering at me through a window. At first it was a bit creepy!

But as I got closer I could see they were just inanimate objects, and that this might also make a great photo. There were lots of things I loved about Lisbon, and many of them can be seen in this shot.

The beautiful bright blue tiles that are a symbol of the city, the mild state of disrepair present in the wall and window frame, and the quirky nature of these small dogs watching from the window all combined to form a simple snapshot of the city in a single frame.

Thanks Helen, the reflection definitely adds something to the shot. Exploring the streets of Lisbon was so much fun!

I’m thinking that perhaps I should concentrate my photography more on dogs and cats. They seem to be very popular!

Haha, perhaps I was being a bit too polite with my description! The tiles are fantastic, and something I’ve not seen much of elsewhere in Europe. They certainly help make Lisbon feel unique amongst other European cities.

Fantastic photo Ben. So many details! The beautiful tiles, the crumbling wondow frame, the reflection and those cute lil puppy dolls 🙂

Thanks Kan, I’m just glad I was paying enough attention to spot this scene. So many great elements in one shot, it doesn’t happen very often!

Ben, I recognized Lisbon immediately in this shot! (yes, I’m really proud of it! haha) I love the missing tiles on the bottom, the colors and the reflection in the window. Such a beautiful composition 🙂

Thanks Thatiana, so glad you recognised it! I think I was lucky with all of the elements coming together. And to be honest if it wasn’t for your great posts about Lisbon I may have never thought to go there. So thank you as well! 🙂

I know that intuitive feeling and often time the feeling is always true and so is this shot… those puppies are the epitome of spontaneity… but hey wait! isn’t that the watcher being watched??? lol however it is legitimate to look from the window down the public street but not legitimate violating windows’ privacy. So what are you looking at photographer keep walking your way!!! woof!!! 🙂
ps: thank you for that stolen glance! it is full of warmth 🙂

Haha, thanks Amel. It’s true that perhaps I shouldn’t be looking in the window! But I couldn’t resist. If you have that kind of thing looking out onto the street you are inviting people to have a look themselves!
