When I saw the theme for this week’s photo challenge I immediately thought of my trip to the Grand Canyon. What an awe-inspiring testament to geological history. Some of the layers of sedimentary rock are nearly 2 billion years old!
We had a great day tour by bus from Las Vegas. The journey was long and at times very bumpy, but certainly more than worth it. I wish I’d known at the time that you could go hiking in the canyon, that must be an incredible experience! I’ll have to make sure I get to that next time round. For now I have my photos of the incredible vistas from the western rim.
Have you visited the Grand Canyon? How was your experience? Did you manage to take a hike?!

The hike is fantastic! You get more bang-for-the-buck taking in the view from the rim, but you’ll never forget the trip down to the canyon floor and back up – it’s fabulous.
Sold! I’ll have to take a hike next time. I’ve always thought it must give you a much better sense of the canyon’s scale.
The Canyon is spectacular, though I’m too old for hiking down to the bottom nowadays! This is a very good shot Ben and definitely meets the Layers brief π
Thanks Jude! I have no idea how tough the hiking is, but I expect it’s probably more difficult than I imagine. I have a tendency to underestimate these things!
Yes, three times, but not enough. Not done (yet?) multiple day rafting tours, and hiking down to the Phantom ranch at the river, ….and mandatory hiking back up. Maybe some day… You would be interested in this post about my first encounter with the canyon. The pictures are no match for yours, but it was many years ago. Enjoy:

What a fantastic trip! I’ll be sure to comment over there. I can feel your enthusiasm for the canyon, it sounds like there are so many activities to get stuck into. I haven’t even touched the surface! I hope you make it back some day to complete your wishlist π
Very beautiful ! π
Thank you. I think the landscape speaks for itself really, I was just there to click the shutter!
Amazing shot Ben, wonderful light quality too. I would love to go there one day, and knowing my hubby, we would have to do the hike!
Thanks Nancy. I love the light too, it really draws you into the image. That sounds great, I hope you make it there some day! I’m really looking forward to hiking it some time in the future. You just can’t beat that feeling, like you’re part of the landscape.

What a stunning photo! Can you tell me please where you took the header one?
Thanks Paula! You mean the header for my website? It was taken in Monterosso Al Mare which is a small town that is part of the the Cinque Terre region in Italy. One of the most beautiful areas I have visited to date!
I am familiar with the Cinque Terre but by photos only. I love Italy π
I couldn’t agree more! Italy is just such an incredible place, the landscape is just stunning everywhere you go. Then you have the food, the wine, the language… One of my favourite countries for sure.
That’s what we have in common π You would like Amalfi very much too :). I will sort it under Italy too, so you’ll be able to look for links π
I would love to visit Amalfi! I’ll have to take a look at your links π
amazing shot!
Thanks Bipasha!
Thank you for the “follow”, Ben. I hope you are doing it cause it really interests you, and not just to return the favour? π
Haha, of course! I think your photography is great, I’ve left some comments over there. I look forward to seeing more of your work!
I think I have nice connection for this week’s theme and then go on your blog and you outshine me big time π Hehe, good thing I posted before I saw yours π
Haha, thanks! It was the only idea I had. So it’s a good job I have been there otherwise I might have been a bit stuck!
Hahahaha, yap, definitely π But I think you would think of something π

Gorgeous shot!
Thanks Cynthia!
Hi Ben,
Just chanced upon your blog.
Stunning shots.
Sreejith.
Thanks Sreejith, really appreciate you comment π Hope to see you back here soon!
Oh wow! I haven’t seen this entry before. This is amazing, Ben! :O The shadows produced by the clouds combined with the layers on the rocks are simply beautiful! Wanna go there!
PS: By the way, I’m not coming to Switzerland amymore. I’ve changed my plans for Christmas/New Year’s Eve and Switzerland will have to wait a bit more π
Thanks Thatiana! I got really lucky with the clouds. It’s an incredible place, I hope you make it there some day!
What are you up to for New Year instead? I think Switzerland might be a bit cheaper at other times of year, but just as beautiful π
This is truly a beautiful photograph Ben. The setting, gentle light and perspective all combine to celebrate a truly amazing moment in time. Take great care and all the best on your travels.
Thanks Konsantine, it truly was one of those moments. They don’t come along very often so I’m glad I was there to capture it with my camera.
The pleasure and honour are mine indeed Ben. Take great care and thank you once again for your beautiful photography.
